This document sets out the structure of the relationship between the Special libraries Association (SLA) and the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).
ALIA’s Special Libraries Working Group has put together this directory of special libraries to support collaboration. The directory is not a comprehensive listing, but it does identify like-minded individuals working in similar situations. The aim is to enable people to share non-competitive information, insight, expertise, ideas and resources; to improve the sense of connectedness in a sector with many one-person libraries, and to strengthen special libraries’ advocacy network.
This directory is an update of the 4th edition published in early 2021.
This advocacy document [poster] illustrates the ways that Australian special libraries serve clients in government, health, law, business, banking, consulting, research, science and technology, the arts, media and other industries by providing facts not fiction, decision-ready information, usable big data, tailored resources, 24/7 electronic delivery of information, a world view of cutting edge information theory and practice, access to the latest news, staff professional development, information and technology expertise, and preservation services.
Paper produced by the ALIA Special Libraries Working Group and AGLIN Think Tank on July 2021 as information resource for ALIA Members and selected stakeholders.
From small libraries run by one or two qualified librarians through to sizeable library and information services employing a team of professionals, special libraries are constantly evolving to meet the changing needs of their users. Special libraries have readily introduced new technologies and new ways of working to deliver greater efficiency and effectiveness.

In 2016, at the ALIA National Conference in Adelaide, we invited 28 leaders from special libraries in government, health, law, research and other fields to come together and discuss the issues affecting the sector, with the aim of developing the basis for a collaborative national action plan.
The Australian Government Libraries Information Network (AGLIN) is gathering guidelines, policies and standards developed by individual institutions, to be de-identified and shared as useful resources for members.
This template has been designed for use by government and special libraries to develop their own Collection Development Policies.
In 2015, the Executive of the Australian Government Libraries and Information Network (AGLIN) commissioned a study into Commonwealth Government library and research services. Following a literature review discussing the issues and challenges facing contemporary government information services (Hallam & Faraker, 2016), relevant organisational data about the individual services was collected through an online service, and library staff shared their views and insights in a series of focus groups.
