Description

Asia-Pacific Library and Information Conference 2018, 30 July - 2 August 2018 Gold Coast: Roar Leap Dare

This conference presentation (PowerPoint slides) supports the talk on a library professional development initiative at Deakin University where liaison librarians were given an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of undertaking a research project. A team of five proactive and passionate liaison librarians embraced this initiative to become librarians as researchers. The team was interested in the relatively under-explored area of how academics perceive librarians. The research question was “How do Deakin academic staff perceive the role of liaison librarians?” The purpose was to collect and analyse data to better understand how academics at Deakin University perceive librarians, so as to help inform how liaison librarians at Deakin University undertake their work.

The findings of the study show that academics highly value liaison librarians and the services they provide. The findings help to better understand the challenges for liaison librarians in building relationships with academics. An unexpected outcome was producing rich qualitative evidence of the value of liaison librarians to the Deakin University academic community.
